A developing storm in the Caribbean Sea is expected to intensify into a hurricane as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico over the next few days. It could make landfall along the Gulf Coast as early as Thursday, potentially as a powerful Category 3 hurricane.
"Everyone along the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend region needs to be prepared for hurricane impacts," said AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva on Monday. He noted that this storm could become the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. this season.
Most forecast models indicate that the hurricane will likely make landfall in Florida or the northern Gulf Coast on Thursday, according to Weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman.
